Winter Wishlist

ONE || TWO || THREE || FOUR ||
 FIVE || SIX || SEVEN || EIGHT

Two weeks ago I was in New York and I got my first taste of winter. The air was crisp, I had to wear a jacket and it was wonderful. I had flashbacks to two years ago when I was there during Christmas time and I've been excited about the holidays and cold weather ever since. Then I came back to California and honest-to-God overheated in a tank top yesterday. I know there are two major holidays before I can break out my Christmas mugs and the weather is no where cold enough to wear a peacoat, but a girl can dream. And sit not-so-patiently waiting!

Since I haven't been able to shake the winter wanting and my heart rate picks up every time I see Christmas decorations (I am aware of my problem... Thanks!)  I did what any normal gal would do and I went online window shopping for my winter wardrobe. These eight pieces are some of my favorites! I really want to add a toggle coat to my closet this year, but I'm thinking maybe in a shorter length. I also tried the navy peacoat on at Nordstrom a few months ago and WOW it was flattering!

What pieces are you most excited about adding to your winter wardrobe?

Fall into Pink

J Crew Factory: Top || Skirt || Similar Necklace || Sunnies

I don't normally wear pink, but I love this cranberry color! These J. Crew Factory pieces are all in the clearance section and until the end of today are an extra 35% off with the code MYSTERYSOLVED.  I was so excited when I ordered these! Yep, I placed my order with this exact ensemble in mind!

So after getting dressed, I stopped into Dean and Deluca for lunch and a coffee! I love the fabric this skirt is made of for the colder months. It's really heavy and looks great with riding boots. It also looks great when it's cold and you need to add tights. I added this gold belt to break up wearing one color. Even though the top is printed and the skirt is solid I still wanted a small contrast piece.

I also like these pieces as separates. I can't wait to pair the top with a pair of dark jeans and the skirt with a cream turtleneck. Each of these are so versatile and for the sale price, who can say no?

Take a second and spread some sunlight today!

Love you lots,

My First Half Marathon!

A year ago, I walked past Union Square in San Francisco and admired the huge tents and crowds celebrating the annual Nike Women's Half Marathon! I was in the middle of training for a few 5Ks and thought to myself, "Next year I am going to run that race!"

Sunday morning, I did just that! And I've never felt better in my life! It was such a huge accomplishment and I was really proud of myself. I think if you are capable of running any kind of race, any distance, any pace you definitely should because there is nothing like crossing a finish line!

The awesome thing about the Nike Half is that you're running with 25,000 other women from all over the world. All the training and planning builds up to this one weekend and you run the race all together. Seeing the crowd in front of you and behind you is really inspiring and even when you're tired and sweaty and gross you just keep going because everyone else is and you're in it together.

I took part in all of the events that Nike hosts over the weekend. So, I'll give you a quick run through of each event!

Friday: Group Warm-Up
On Friday night we took over Pier 35 and did a group workout together. At this point I was crazy nervous and wondering why I was doing this. My training didn't go as I planned so I felt super unprepared. Looking around everyone seemed so ready, everyone was with a friend and a bunch of them ran the race last year. I was alone, nervous and totally new, but once we started stretching and working the nerves started to subside. Then one of the Nike Run Club coaches got up and gave a motivational talk and I felt a lot better. For the first time that week I thought, "Hey! I can do this!" Then we got to see a video of the course we were going to conquer in two days and that really helped visualize what lay ahead! As we exited we were greeted by a grocery store set up by Whole Foods and got tons of samples. Chocolate truffles, fresh juice and protein bars for days!

Saturday: Shake Out Run!
Saturday morning was humid and rainy, and my nerves were back in full force! I checked in, got ushered into the green corral and waited until we took off on our two mile run through the city. I really enjoyed this event because it was basically just a two mile cheer-fest. The streets weren't closed so we ran on the sidewalks and stopped for traffic and stoplights. We ran 2 miles in 22 minutes, so it was pretty slow, but a ton of fun. Nike employees ran with us with music and they chanted and cheered us on while city dwellers looked on in amusement and disdain as the pack of spandex-clad women took over the sidewalks. Whole Foods was back in full force and the square was set up for tons of selfie opportunities (I'll take advantage of next year). Then I went to pick up my race bib, watched some college football and took a nap to prepare for the early morning ahead. I also ate a giant plate of pancakes and then had some amazing pasta for dinner because... carb loading.

I also set out my outfit and pinned my bib on that night so I didn't forget anything. I recommend keeping your ID and insurance card in your arm band with your phone just in case!

SUNDAY: RACE DAY!
My alarm went off at 5:15 and I thought I was going to be sick. I was so nervous! I choked down half a bowl of oatmeal and headed down to the staging area. I was in wave two so once the horns blew and the race started we waited for about 15-30 minutes before we crossed the starting line. Then there was no turning back, my nerves went away and I just ran.

The scenery was amazing! Running through Golden Gate Park was my favorite part. It almost makes me want to pack up and move to the city so I can make that a regular running route. The air was cool and smelled like eucalyptus and the crowds had thinned enough to really find my stride.

The hill at mile 10 will haunt my dreams. Next year I will train on hills more because I want to be able to run up the whole thing (At that point my uphill walking speed was the same as my running speed). More training and I'll get it next time for sure!

After that it was all downhill and flat roads to the finish!

I collected my bag of Whole Foods snacks, pink water bottle and my Tiffany and Co. finisher's "medal" and stood in line for my finisher's jacket! I wore the necklace and the jacket all over San Francisco for the rest of the day.

I'm already looking up another half to run in! It was so much fun and I can't wait until next year!

Make sure you spread some sunlight today! We'll be back with a Monday with Matt next week!

Nothing Better than Flannel

There isn't anything better in the fall than a great flannel shirt and Target has been on top of it this year. I found this one not too long ago, but it isn't on their website. Check the stores near you, though, because it's probably there! I have been living in flannel shirts this season and I doubt that will change until spring!

I have had these boots since last season and they are one of my go-to pairs. I think everyone needs a classic pair of cognac riding boots in their closets! While I would love to have a pair of Tory Burch boots in my closet I can't justify buying a pair with these in my closet (Boots take up too much space to own two similar pairs!) These are a great and cheaper alternative and they are all leather so they wear well and have held up really well!

Tassels are huge right now and while I don't plan on wearing a tassel skirt anytime soon, I like throwing them in here and there. This necklace had been in another post (sorry!), but it's so cute! I love the double tassel and the knot, plus it's on sale under $10!

Spread some sunlight today!

Landline by Rainbow Rowell

*Psst* Click the picture to find a copy

I have had this book on my list for a very long time. I bought it right after I finished Fangirl and I wanted to read more of Rainbow Rowell's work. I was super excited because the hardback is less than $6 on sale at B&N! I admit to being a total book snob and preferring hardback books, so getting this one for such a great price really made my day!

I was really interested to read this because it's one of Rowell's adult fictions. I had a love/hate relationship with Fangirl, so I was intrigued to see how she handled an adult main character. This was my travel book for the last two weeks and I loved it! I didn't know how I felt about the main character, Georgie, being a wife and mother because I'm not and sometimes find relating to those characters hard (I never read the books about women going through a divorce or about how raising teenagers are hard. I just don't get it and find it rather boring.). Thank goodness this book was more about her relationship and finding what's most important in her life and left the children and mom stuff more as a B-story line. I also never really liked Georgie's husband, Neal, which made cheering for their relationship a little difficult. He seemed like a real stick in the mud.

I loved Georgie's best friend, Seth, because he reminded me so much of mine. They meet in college at a student publication, they're creative partners and when given the chance they spend more time together than with anyone else. So basically my college and current life minus the possible romantic aspect.

I did see the ending coming, but it was still a fun book to read all the way through. Rainbow Rowell writes the best characters and even the supporting characters are so colorful. Georgie's mom and sister really made me laugh.

I completely recommend this book and everything that Rainbow Rowell writes!

Happy reading! I hope you add this one to your shelf!

Green and Gold

Leith Dress || Forever 21 Denim Vest (old) (similar here & here) ||

I was really skeptical about this swing dress trend that's happening, but if you can't beat 'em join 'em. So I bought this one because although I wasn't super impressed with the fit (it's just so loose) I absolutely loved the color! I hear that swing/trapeze dresses look great on everyone, but I think the secret is it's just so baggy that you can't tell how much you ate for lunch. It doesn't magically make you look thinner, it just hides all of your not-so-favorite areas under a flowy mass of fabric, which I have grown to support wholly. There's nothing worse then being constricted by your clothing all day.

If you feel like this style makes you look bigger than you are (a thought that crossed my mind), my tip is to pair it with a vest or a blanket scarf for fall. Adding a vest will make sure you don't lose your waist and keep your shape. A blanket scarf will add a little texture to the outfit and keep it from looking like yards on yards of the same color draped over you. Basically, it distracts the eye to another interesting piece!

This green was screaming for gold accessories so I threw on some of my favorite arm candy, two of my fav rings and a layered delicate necklace to finish the outfit. I plan to wear this dress again soon, but next time with rinding boots, cute socks and a blanket scarf! I just have to wait until it's a little cooler outside!

Spread some sunlight today!
