Pumpkin Pie Protein Shakes!!

I love starting my day with a protein shake! It's a super filling and healthy breakfast! Since it's almost Thanksgiving and Pumpkin Pie is a staple at my house this time of year, I wanted to make a healthy protein-packed version! I liked this much more than a super-sweet latte, plus you can make it at home and take it with you when you are on the go!!

Snow Day in Tahoe!!

I never turn down a getaway, especially one to the mountains! I wasn't expecting it to snow, but when I woke up snow was falling and it didn't slow down all day. There's nothing better than fresh powder on the ground!! It's so quiet and so beautiful! And now I can't wait for Christmas!!

I am sure you've seen similar vests all over Pinterest. When I saw it on Etsy, I knew I wanted it in my closet for trips to the mountain just like this one! I did some price comparing and when I purchased this one it was the cheapest I could find. I am wearing a size small and there's a lot of extra bulk so keep that in mind when ordering because you can't return it! This vest is faux fur and very soft! Plus, everything is better with a monogram! 

These boots are still available and they are on sale! I wear them all the time and couldn't recommend them more. I plan to wear them until it's too warm in the spring to wear them any longer. If you plan to wear them in the snow make sure you apply a suede protector first!!

I will be the first to admit that I was dubious when the midi trend started gaining momentum. I wasn't sure it would be flattering and I was very skeptical how it would look on me. However, I found this cream skirt in a heavier fabric and I thought I might as well try it out for the fall! Plus, I think this skirt with a red structured crop top will look amazing for holiday parties.

I wore this look to a graduation ceremony in Monterey and while I might have been overdressed I loved the look. I love classic pieces of clothing and I felt like part of the royal family in this skirt and ankle strap shoes. I originally planned on wearing a black silk top, but when I stumbled upon this bodysuit at Target I knew it would look great. I like the long sleeves and the cage back adds a little interest to an outfit. I can't wait to see how else I can style it. 

This necklace came in one of my PopSugar boxes and every time I wear it I get tons of compliments. It's handmade and "one-of-a-kind", which are two of my favorite adjectives. Plus, it would make an amazing gift! Are you gift planning already??  I am currently not spending money until after Thanksgiving so that I can save up for the perfect gifts for all my loved ones! We will see how a month of not shopping goes!!

The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. By Adelle Waldman

The amount of time I have had to read lately has been extremely limited. But while I was in New York last month I made a trip to Strand (check out everything I got here) and The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. was on the bestsellers table with a great price! I've heard about this book quite a bit and it's a national bestseller, so I decided to go for it.

It's a thin book, but it's packed with a lot more story than you would think! The first thing I noticed was how intelligent the author must be. The characters are without exception extremely complex and intellectual (almost all of them are aspiring writers living in Brooklyn). The whole story follows the dating patterns of the main character, Nate. To be completely honest I kind of hated him, but the insights into the male mind (as written by a female author) were really intriguing. Waldman does a great job at picking on both sexes – no one is safe in this book. She did a great job picking out things women in relationships do that drive me crazy, like sending angry emails post-breakup. But then on the flip side she really digs in on how terribly Nate treats his girlfriend, whether it's getting annoyed with her for wanting to cook him breakfast, or fixating on her under-arm jiggle.

Overall, my dislike for Nate won out. He seemed like one of those people you encounter in college who knows he's intelligent, and won't let you forget it. He was self-loathing and conceited, and I didn't always follow his thought process and got frustrated with his bad decisions. However, I think that was a main reason why Waldman wrote from Nate's perspective. It was an extremely effective way to show the disconnect between the way men and women view relationships, solve problems and deal with heartbreak and rejection. 

I must say that I really liked Aurit, Nate's friend. She seemed to be the wise character who kept the book grounded with her reason. 

Overall, I enjoyed this book; the writing was very well done and intelligent. Fluffy is definitely not a word you can use to describe this book. I don't often read books with male main characters, but I am really glad I bought this one. It examines relationships in a very different way, which was refreshing. I was happy that there wasn't really a "happily ever after". It's more realistic, and a nice change to the formulaic Hollywood romance.

Monterey by the Bay

I spent a day and a half in Monterey this week and the ocean was so beautiful! Our hotel room looked out on this pier and I couldn't wait to go explore it! I love the ocean and especially the Monterey Bay because you're never far from seeing a sea lion, or an otter, or another wild, adorable animal.

If you haven't noticed from all the posts, I love plaid and I love flannel. There's a section in my closet dedicated to flannel in all different colors. They really are the best thing to wear in the fall and winter and look amazing with a pair of jeans. Throw on a scarf, a cardigan, or pair a cute pair of boots and you have an amazing outfit. This plaid has a really thin line of burgundy so I knew that this cardigan had to make an appearance! You can't go wrong with a long, solid cardigan!

Last weekend I switched out my closets. The cold weather gear came out of storage and the summer skirts and tanks went in. It took all weekend and is still a work in progress... However, it's kind of like having a whole new wardrobe! While a lot of the pieces are from last year, I haven't worn them for a while so I get to rework them and style them in new ways this year! 

I love layering pieces. Growing up in south Texas kept me from really understanding how to layer winter wear. It was never cold enough! But then I moved to Oklahoma and then Northern California and learning to layer during the winter months became imperative to not freezing! Now I love to layer different pieces because it adds so much to an outfit! You can mix textures and patterns and re-wear pieces, but make them look brand new! 

I like this black and white flannel a lot because it's longer so it's great for layering. Mine is from American Eagle and is a few years old, but I totally recommend looking for one with the extra length. It looks cute peeking out from under the bottom of sweaters and keeps from looking too bulky when you add layers on top! Also, I bought this black V-neck sweater last year at Banana Republic and it became one of my most worn basics. It's super flattering! I literally want one in every color.

I found these boots at Nordstrom Rack during their last Clear the Rack event. I love Stuart Weitzman, but the boots are pretty expensive! These are the Highway boot in Blasue. The Highway boot is available from a few Ebay sellers if you Google it. The one I linked is the Hijack boot and from what I can tell the only noticeable difference is that the heel on mine is suede and the heel on the Hijack is stacked. I actually prefer a stacked heel because it wears better than a sueded heel, but when you find Stuart Weitzman on sale you don't say no!
